Electric Orange honors the legacy of Can, Amon Duul II, Neu!, Harmonia and Birth Control while managing to deliver a sound that is fresh and inspiring.
With the addition of Electric Orange‘s 20th anniversary show, the lineup for the 2012 Roadburn Afterburner is complete. The Roadburn 2012 Afterburner features thrash legends Coroner (headlining), Yob, Bongripper, Black Cobra, Internal Void, The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation, Bong, Urfaust, Dragged Into Sunlight, Fleshpress , Atlantis and Electric Orange.

We are very excited to announce the third installment of Roadburn Festival Introduces. The idea is to show promising Dutch bands that combine their own vibe with a distinctive Roadburn flair, whether that means a psychedelic slant, having roots in the heavy 70s or an unstoppable need to churn out instru-metal.
This year, we will offer TANK86 the opportunity to connect with the international Roadburn community during an intimate show at the Cul de Sac on Saturday April 14th in Tilburg, Holland. Doors open 1pm and the show starts at 2pm.
TANK86 have been honing their instrumental take on stoner, epic doom, sludge, old-school headbanging heavy metal and even progressive metal since 2004. Their hard work has come to fruition on their highly acclaimed full-length album Rise, and we feel the band has something unique and interesting to offer Roadburners.
Initially, TANK86 may have prompted comparisons to Karma To Burn’s brand of bone-charring riffs and heavy, groove-based approach, but over the years the band’s instru-metal has matured in the rehearsal space and live on stage (including a European tour with Dozer) into something special and genre-defying.
Live, TANK86 are just as dynamic and atmospheric as they are on record, building up some captivating grooves by way of neck-snapping, killer riffing, and a whirlwind of instrumental wizardry (pairing odd time signatures with plenty of tempo changes), hair-raising hooks, spooky passages and relentless power that draws the audience in. It’s always an exciting show.
The Netherlands has been long overdue for a band to put the lowlands back on the international instru-metal map. We’re thrilled to see TANK86 rise to the occasion!

That’s the kind of surprise we do like! Thus, we’re really pleased to announce that Belgium’s Alkerdeel has been confirmed for Roadburn 2012.
Alkerdeel is currently making waves in the underground with their sophomore album, Morinde, which will be officially released on February 24th via Consouling Sounds and At War With False Noise.
Alkerdeel has pushed up the ante with the release of Morinde as not only the songs have matured and gained more depth, the lo-fi approach of the previous recordings has made way for a sound that can reveal all its sludgy, blackened, sluggish nuances. Musically, Alkerdeel infuse raw sludge and doom with filthy blackmetal, and if you’re a fan of Burning Witch, Darkthrone or Beherit, then you”ll definitely like Alkerdeel, too. Horns up!

Roadburn 2012: Het Patronaat replaces Midi Theatre

The Midi Theatre was closed by the Tilburg city council on 1 January 2012 for financial and political reasons. Unfortunately, there is no way to reopen it even temporarily for this year’s Roadburn Festival. The addition of the Midi Theatre to our festival during the past two editions was a huge success. Sadly, there was absolutely nothing we could do to prevent it from closing.
Fortunately, we have found a fourth stage that is slightly larger than 013′s Green Room in a nearby venue: Het Patronaat. If you have been to Roadburn before, you very well might have taken a break on the steps. Or perhaps you walked right past without noticing it. That certainly won’t be the case this year!

Located only about 30 meters from the entrance to the 013 venue, the beautiful former church annex can hold up to 900 people at any given time. The main floor can accommodate about 300 people. It features a large bar where you can relax and refuel with good food and drinks. We are planning some afternoon acoustic shows here, too: stay tuned for more details.
The second floor is where the bands will be playing. It holds about 600 people and will be set up for maximum sound quality and visibility. The bands scheduled to play Het Patronaat undoubtedly will be in demand, so if you show up and the second floor is at full capacity, you will have to wait until someone leaves.
If your very existence depends on seeing a specific band, the best advice is to show up early to avoid the potentional stress of having to stand in line. Yes, we know: that might mean missing part of a set you are really enjoying in 013 -in Dutch we call this a luxe-probleem or “luxury problem.”

Roadburn Cinema Presents: Puzzleface, A Short Film w/ Iconic Metal Band Voivod and Legendary British Filmmaker Ken Russel

Where can you find Rue Morgue founder Rodrigo Gudino praying to Ken Russell before being murdered by a man with a puzzle piece for a face? In the same short film that features Voivod‘s Denis ‘Snake’ Belanger as a mad scientist, of course, and a killer soundtrack that includes Voivod performing Missing Sequences from their classic album Nothingface.
The 18-minute cult musical Puzzleface by experimental filmmaker musician Spookey Ruben and preeminent creative producer David Daniloff is a hilarious, surreal and eccentric mash-up of cult-horror-comedy genres. Imagine Friday the 13th meets Xanadu at Frank Zappa‘s house. And, yes, that really is Ken Russell, the recently deceased director of The Devils, Tommy, Lair Of The White Worm and Altered States. And, no, the 80s musical throwback sequence is not a hallucination.
Puzzleface puts an outlandish twist on the boundaries of search and destroy slasher horror, serving up over-the-top satire, gushing gallons of blood, naughty nuns, possessed priests, a deadly crucifix and a homicidal maniac on the loose. The film follows Dr. Von Spreckenzeedoitsh played by Denis ‘Snake’ Belanger, investigating a series of murders by a serial killer known as ‘Puzzleface’. Who will be his next victim?
Puzzleface will be screening downstairs in the V39 basement, where Roadburn Cinema returns from Thursday, April 12 to Saturday April 14th.

From 2005 to 2010, Director Kenneth Thomas documented the live shows and musicians on 3 artist-driven record labels: Hydra Head Records, Neurot Recordings, and Constellation. Each of these labels combines hard-to-define, heavy music with a visual aesthetic that has enraptured worldwide fans, without the need for radio or corporate media outlets.
Those 5 years of footage and interviews have been released as the documentary, Blood, Sweat + Vinyl: DIY in the 21st Century, and the director is thrilled to have it screened at Roadburn 2012. “We can think of no better way to experience this film than in the midst of the same spirit, crowds and music that inspired it.”
The 90 minute film features: Neurosis, Isis, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Thee Silver Mt. Zion, Pelican, Jesu, Cave In, Oxbow, A Storm of Light, Evangelista, Do Make Say Think, and others. Additional footage presents interviews with the bands, label heads, and artists that create the album covers, posters, and visual aesthetic that fans value as much as the music itself.

We are thrilled to announce that the exhibition Worlds Away – The Art of Michel Langevin will be part of Roadburn Festival 2012. The exhibition will feature work by Voivod drummer and artist Michel ‘Away’ Langevin, who together with his fellow bandmates is curating the special Au-delà du Réel event this year.
Gust van Dijk, Home to Contemporary Art, will host the exhibition. The gallery is located just around the corner and up the street from the 013 and Patronaat venues. You may have been there during last year’s festival to marvel at Ester Segarra’s photography.
Michel ‘Away’ Langevin (48) was born under the sign of Gemini, which seems apt for someone who is consistently described as down to earth but whose art is revered for being so far out. As the drummer and founding member of the mighty Voivod, he began touring the globe in the mid-Eighties and hasn’t stopped yet. As an artist, he likes nothing more than to retire to his studio in splendid isolation to create with his pencils, inks and computer. These contradictions are alive and well in his art, where ancient history collides with the future, aliens meet archetypes, and insects share a tender embrace against a backdrop of warheads.
Growing up in Kenogami, a small town north of Montreal, the din of nearby factories and news reports of nuclear proliferation fed Michel’s anxiety and dystopian visions. Initially, music and art offered an escape; later, they became an outlet. Michel credits myriad publications, films and music with influencing his art and providing inspiration, such as Philippe Druillet (Metal Hurlant), whose mutant warriors in Urm le Fou sowed the seeds of imagination for the Voivod character.
Scenes from films that impressed him at a young age would weave their way into his artwork: once the stuff of nightmares, he enlisted the giant arachnid from The Incredible Shrinking Man to tow a carnival trailer on Angel Rat, Voivod’s sixth album. Rodney Matthews’ cover art for Nazareth’s No Mean City made an indelible impression but it was the prog band Magma that provided Michel with the template for the first Voivod shirts. The one-time chemistry student is a true alchemist at heart.
Those spidery lines, those imploring stares, the astronomical symbols, the phantasmagoric landscapes, the alien nations, and the alienation itself: you can tell Michel’s work from a million light years away.

We’re really excited to announce that Wino will be doing a second show at Roadburn 2012, in addition to his performance at The Obsessed reunion. On Friday, April 13th, Wino will pair up with Conny Ochs for an heartfelt performance at Het Patronaat. The duo is currently touring Europe in support of their much acclaimed collaborative album, Heavy Kingdom, now out on Exile on Mainstream Records.
Heavy Kindom is more of an extension of Wino‘s solo album, Adrift, as it draws from folk, Americana and blues, as well as from his more obvious influences, thus displaying the same darkness and melancholy of the finest doom metal, only by stripping the music back to its naked form.
Despite the age gap between the pair, Ochs’ vocals display the same whirlwind of emotions as Wino, and they have a natural, sympathetic way of allowing their own ranges to harmonise and weave around each other… much as they do with their guitar playing.
Wino & Conny Ochs will bring their ‘collective acoustic doom’ to the main floor of Het Patronaat, located only about 30 meters from the entrance to the 013 venue. Please note: their performance will start at 3pm, only 30 minutes after the doors open.

In the end though, Ochs‘ primal approach, his tone and his lyrics will keep you engaged, there’s always hope around the next corner of the labyrinth, and he makes sure you won’t get lost. Instead, you’ll find a heart warming spirituality underpinning his straight up honesty.

On Thursday, April 12, Belgium’s Cosmic Masseur will host a psychedelic / prog / late 60s / heavy 70s freak out at Het Patronaat from 1am – 3am. The intrepid Maarten and Pat will bring their metal disco extravaganza to the 013 foyer bar starting at 1am and lasting until 3am. You are cordially invited to let your freak flag fly, or to break out your best air guitar moves. If you don’t have enough energy left after a day’s worth of intense live music for that level of participation, stop by anyway and see what the buzz is about.
Friday the 13th is your lucky day: Finland’s Psychotropic Caravan (deejays Astro, Jugh and Shrike) rolls up to host the afterparty at Het Patronaat after the last band is finished. No strangers to the underground festival circuit in Helsinki, this marks their return to Roadburn. Expect some raucous singalongs (Finnish style) to keep the party going, just like last year. Meanwhile, over at 013 venue‘s foyer bar, the Ula Bomber deejays will show the Roadburn crowd a thing or two about air guitar and metal singalongs! Their motto: Bang That Head That Doesn’t Bang. Just so you know.
Saturday night is alright for fighting metal fatigue! On April 14, Roadburn warriors Maarten and Pat are back to spin tons of excellent classic metal, doom, heavy 70s, thrash and other delights at Het Patronaat from 1am ’til 3am. Faster! Heavier! Louder! Be there! At the same time, Finland’s Psychotropic Caravan will do the honors at 013 venue‘s foyer bar to round out this year’s 21st century schizoid afterparty series. “Jesus mikä kuosi!”

Сегодня только подали доки на визу. теперь вот волнуюсь сижу - 6 лет назад у меня было нарушение визового режима шенгенской зоны, со штрафом, все дела.. Но по планам десант из 6 чел высаживается в вскр в амстере и до четверга там. Так что разгоночное пре-пати в Little Devil пропускаем . В четверг с утра рвем когти в кемпинг, кидаем палатку на одну ночь (которую скорее всего будем усиленно гулять ибо 2 палатки тащить влом) - и на фест. В пятницу переселяемся в цивилизацию - джангалоу - до понедельника. (ну затем 4 из нас еще до вскр в берлине, скорее всего дезерт фест зацепим до кучи).

ааа, ну ясно, тогда свяжемся уже в четверг. смотрите не опоздайте. я не знаю как будут в четверг перед фестом ходить автобусы до кэмпинга, но рассчитывайте на то, что даже если часто, то вся процедура (добраться от вокзала в тилбурге до кэмпинга, зарегистрироваться, разбить палатки, добраться обратно) может занать пару часов. + лучше поменять билеты на браслеты заранее, т.к., например, в позопрошлом году была невъебенная очередь и многие проебали первые банды... учитвыя то, что в этом году фест открывают diSEMBOWELMENT (ну и остальные), лично для меня это была бы катастрофа

тащем-та, мой скромный совет: не пытаться посмотреть ВСЁ... это, после определённого времени (3ий-4ый день), становится контрпродуктивным, имо. бошка уже хреново всё воспринимает. как по мне, лучше смотреть полные сэты; по возможности делать перерывы с выходом отдохнуть на свежий воздух и т.д. (но, я думаю, вы бы до этого и сами додумались ); приходить на интересующие сэты заранее, т.к. в маленькие залы, на определённые банды, не так легко попасть. бывает даже очередь перед входом. а так, конкретные группы не хотелось бы советовать, т.к. вкусы у всех разные...

...а, учитывая то, что на данном фесте представлен очень широкуй спектр жанров (от Бродриковской электроники по Некрос Кристосовский дэт), каждый делает для себя свой Роадбёрн, что и есть ахуеннаха фишка энтого феста. но скажу так, что у органов есть какое-то поразительное чутьё на то, какие банды ахуенные живьём (возможно и то, что всё это проходит в одном из лучших европейских (ато и мировых) клубов, с лучшими европескими звукорежами а наилучшей атмосферой, тоже на это влияет). так что, на что бы ты ни пошёл, гарантированы одни положительные впечатления. но всё же, наверное, лучше попытаться переслушать как можно больше групп заранее перед фестом. время еще есть
